Asus A7V880 motherboard
Purchased in 2004 and moved to my server in 2007, this motherboard has never
given me any problems. One of the main things that attracted me to it is the
fact that it has five PCI expansion slots. Nowadays you don't see that too
often anymore, mostly because so many more bells and whistles are integrated
into motherboards than in the past. Of course, the problem with that is that
it limits consumer choice: I want to determine what my system can and can't
do and I don't want manufacturers making those choices for me.
One of the only limitations of this motherboard is that it has only two SATA
connectors and a single serial port. Where SATA is concerned, this is an early
model, with later ones having more of these connectors on average. As for the
serial port, two of these used to be standard on every motherboard, but this has been
changing ever since modems — of the dial-up variety — have fallen into
disuse. Of course, that doesn't mean serial ports are are any less useful than
before, but these days you more often have to add your own.
